Description
Martorana Fruit is undoubtedly one of the greatest prides of the Sicilian confectionery tradition. The peculiarity of this dessert, which makes it famous throughout the world, is certainly the variety of shapes that this product takes on in the perfect reproduction of fruit, vegetables and sometimes fish. Internally it is similar to marzipan, as it is made exclusively with almond flour and sugar, but noticeably sweeter and tastier.
According to a well-known tradition, Martorana fruit was born because the nuns of the Martorana monastery, located in the heart of the historic center of Palermo near the church of the same name, to embellish the monastery for the visit of the Pope of the time, decided to replace the fruits collected from their bare garden, with new fruits made and decorated by hand with almond flour and sugar!
